High priestess of soul

A portrait made with pastels, a sophisticated material known for its intense colors, fragility, vibrancy, and great luminance, is worked layer by layer to capture the personality of Eunice Kathleen Wayman. Just like her breathy, stifled, tremulous, and almost breathless voice, Nina Simone lived in intimate conflict with her bipolarity, facing her own contradictions in a life filled with lights and shadows. She fought for human rights, the African-American identity, and, most importantly, her freedom.
