“Stone Wall” portrays Sylvia Rivera, a prominent Puerto Rican–American transgender activist, shown in a slightly profile position. Her relaxed expression conveys deep strength and confidence. The surrounding atmosphere is complex: on one hand, a joyful sense of celebration is reflected through bright colors and an aura of freedom; on the other, the calmness in Rivera’s face, set against a somewhat chaotic background, suggests a past marked by struggle and hardship.

The overall mood of the artwork is both a celebration of Rivera’s legacy and a vindication of human rights, while also acknowledging the battles she endured. Sylvia Rivera was one of the instigators of the Stonewall riots, a catalyst event for the gay liberation movement. Her revolutionary spirit, her pain over social injustices, and her commitment to the liberation of the marginalized led her to defy systems of power and cultural hegemony.

Today, her figure stands as a cornerstone in our shared history. In her own words, Rivera offered testimony to the suffering and resilience of trans and racialized people: “Street drag queens, revolutionary action, survival, revolt and queer struggle; the drags endured all imaginable oppression, like ladies-in-waiting, waiting for something to happen — and when it did, they were right there.”

This artwork, rich in layers of meaning, pays tribute to a key figure in the LGBTQ+ movement. Through a mixed media technique —oil, charcoal, marker, and ornaments— the artist captures the visual energy of a time shaped by struggle and hope, turning collective memory into an aesthetic and political experience. “Stone Wall” stands as a visual anthem to resistance and dignity.
